AERA
Building and scaling African startups for global markets.
aera.llc (opens in a new tab)AERA is a venture-building platform focused on discovering, developing and backing promising African founders and technology companies.
We work with founders from the earliest stages of an idea, helping them interrogate the problem, test assumptions, validate demand and build toward products that can scale.
Why AERA
Africa has no shortage of ambitious people or important problems worth solving.
But a promising founder with a good idea still has a long distance to travel before that idea becomes a viable company.
The early questions are often the hardest.
Is the problem real?
Who experiences it?
How are they solving it today?
Will they use a different solution?
Will they pay for it?
What is the simplest way to find out?
And, only after answering enough of those questions: what should we build?
AERA exists to work with founders through that journey.
We are particularly interested in talented founders who may not yet have access to traditional venture networks, large amounts of capital or all the resources required to turn an idea into a company.
Potential should not disappear simply because someone begins without the right network.
How we work
Our approach is deliberately simple:
Problem → People → Test → Learn → Build → Scale
Start with the problem
Before thinking about features, interfaces or technology, we try to understand the problem.
Who has it? How important is it? What are people currently doing about it? What assumptions are we making that can be tested?
AERA encourages founders to become attached to solving the problem rather than becoming too attached to the first version of their solution.
Test cheaply
Not every idea needs an app on day one.
Sometimes the right first experiment is a WhatsApp group. Sometimes it is a landing page, a spreadsheet, a manual service or a simple prototype.
The objective is not to make the first version look impressive.
The objective is to learn.
We try to avoid committing significant engineering resources to assumptions that could have been tested much more simply.
Learn from real behaviour
What people say matters.
What they actually do matters more.
We look for evidence in behaviour: whether people participate, return, pay, refer others, contribute, complain, stop using something or find unexpected ways to use it.
Those signals help us understand whether we are getting closer to something worth building.
Build when building becomes necessary
Once we understand enough about the problem and the behaviour around it, technology becomes much more useful.
Instead of asking engineers to turn assumptions into software, we can begin turning what we have learned into a product.
The MVP then becomes another stage of learning, not the end of it.
The thinking behind AERA
AERA grew partly from the way I learned to build products myself.
Fitness Space did not begin with a sophisticated health application. We started close to the people experiencing the problem, operated manually, learned from their behaviour and gradually built technology around what we discovered.
I have continued to use versions of that approach across other products.
It made me interested in a bigger question:
What happens if we create a system that helps more African founders build this way?
Not simply by giving advice from a distance, but by working alongside founders as they move from an idea to evidence, from evidence to product, and from product toward a scalable company.
That became part of the thinking behind AERA.
Founders, not just ideas
AERA is interested in the person behind the company as much as the initial idea.
Ideas change.
Assumptions fail.
Markets teach you things you didn't expect.
Products sometimes become very different from what their founders originally imagined.
That makes the founder's ability to listen, learn, adapt and continue building extremely important.
We want to work with people who are deeply interested in the problems they are solving and willing to let evidence change how they solve them.
The aim is not simply to produce more startups.
It is to help build stronger founders capable of building enduring companies.
From idea to scale
AERA is designed around the full journey:
01Idea
Understand the problem and the people experiencing it.
02Validation
Test the important assumptions as simply and cheaply as possible.
03Product
Turn what has been learned into an MVP and continue learning from real usage.
04Traction
Build evidence that the product solves a meaningful problem and that people want it.
05Scale
Help founders think beyond the first users toward stronger systems, teams, partnerships, markets and opportunities for growth.
Beyond product
Building a company eventually requires more than building software.
Founders need people, mentorship, technology, infrastructure, partnerships, access to markets and, at the appropriate stage, capital.
AERA's broader ambition is to build an ecosystem around those needs, helping promising African founders access more of what they need to move from early potential to globally competitive companies.
What we're building toward
The ambition is bigger than helping founders launch MVPs.
We want AERA to become a platform through which promising African founders can move from:
Idea → Validation → Product → Traction → Scale
while gaining access to the mentorship, technology, infrastructure, partnerships and global opportunities that can help them build stronger companies.
Africa already has people capable of building important companies.
The opportunity is to create better systems around them.
Working with AERA
We are interested in founders working on meaningful problems who are still early enough to question their assumptions and ambitious enough to think beyond their immediate market.
A founder does not need to arrive with a finished product.
In many cases, that is precisely the point.
What matters is having a problem worth understanding, the willingness to test what you believe, and the persistence to keep learning as the company takes shape.
